Seasonal Foods - Fall Edition

Happy Fall! Oh, what a wonderful time of year this is. Cool mornings, cozy sweaters, coffee, and of course, the rain all make this time of year my absolute favourite. The definition of Harvest is: “the process of gathering a ripe crop from the field”, and if we begin to think about what we used to do when refrigeration wasn’t invented yet, we would gather all of our fruits & vegetables that we grew throughout the summer months and preserve them.

Homemade Pasta with Salt Spring Island Mussels

There is nothing better than fresh pasta, in my opinion at least, and there is definitely nothing better than eating fresh pasta on a sailboat. I’ll be honest, I had only made pasta once before this dinner so I was actually super nervous (and stressed) when prepping the pasta the night before the dinner. This dish was probably the biggest hit out of all of the dinners, maybe next to the salmon or the Orange & Date Salad (which will be posted soon!). The sweetness of the tomatoes and the bitterness of the Italian parsley really made this dish that much better, but of course adding a few good splashes of white wine and a shit load of garlic also made it REALLY tasty.

Grapefruit & Sumac Salad With Watercress

Over the summer I have had the absolute pleasure of cooking delicious 4-course meals for a wonderful group of people, and better yet, I have been getting to do this on the sailboat my sister and I own together. Her name is Osprey and she is a 36-foot sailboat that holds so many wonderful memories of mine and my sisters childhood. Luckily my sister and I are able to continue making such precious memories on this lady - mine just so happen to be by cooking a wonderful dinner on it.

Fermented Foods: How to & Why

Fermented foods have existed in many traditional cultures for centuries (from what we know). When modern civilization became a thing, the traditions around fermentation dissipated. Rose Water Shortbread Cookies

Honestly, I don’t know if there is anything that is more addictive than the fragrance of rose. It’s sultry, romantic, and considered to be an aphrodisiac (for a good reason). Rose scented perfumes, body butters, and baked goods just get to me.

Buckwheat Banana Bread with Blackberry Jam

While I know that there are a plethora of recipes out on the internet, I wanted to make this a little different and add a tonne of nutrients into one loaf that tends to be on the sweeter side. Besides this recipe being loaded with prebiotic fibre that bananas have to offer, which help feed our good gut bacteria, it tastes so. dang. good.

Your Weekend Adventure Food Guide

I was introduced to the outdoors at a very young age, thanks to my parents. I grew up sailing on a beautiful sailboat (the same boat that my sister and I co-own together now!), or my family would go away to the Kootenay’s and stay at a cabin that my dad and his friends built when they were younger along with tonnes of other weekend adventures. Nowadays it’s almost like it’s something that I continuously crave.
